In a groundbreaking discovery, an AI neural network has identified that the face of St. Joseph in Raphael’s “Madonna della Rosa” was likely not painted by the renowned artist. This revelation supports long-held scholarly debates about the painting’s authenticity. Researchers, including Hassan Ugail, developed a specialized AI algorithm trained on confirmed works of Raphael to analyze individual elements of the painting. The AI’s deep feature analysis scrutinized brushstrokes, color palette, and shading. While Madonna, Child, and St John were confirmed as Raphael’s work, St. Joseph’s face differed stylistically. The team speculates that Giulio Romano, Raphael’s pupil, might have contributed to this part of the painting. This AI technology, which has shown 98% accuracy in identifying Raphael’s works, provides a valuable tool for art authentication, complementing traditional expert analysis. The full research has been published in the journal Heritage Science.
